DS to Wii U
I look at franchises that could make the leap to the big screen
Published on 15/08/2012

Over the past few years I've rediscovered the DS. I don't know what it is, but since getting my DSi I've been captivated by the software available for it, and have discovered many excellent new series. By far my favourite of the lot is the Professor Layton series, which as a game primarily based around puzzles, surprised me.

When Wii U was announced I instantly recognised a connection between it and the DS. The touch screen interface that could interact with a primary display is the foundation of the DS concept, and now we're getting it at home too. While playing Professor Layton and the Lost Future the other day a thought struck me - could DS games make the leap to Wii U, much like the already announced Scribblenauts Unlimited is doing?

The potential of an HD Professor Layton game has me greatly excited, and that was the spawning of this article, but the more I looked at it, the more games there were that could make the leap. From the brilliance of Advance Wars to the court-room drama of Ace Attorney to the more recent Kid Icarus: Uprising, the DS is a potential gold mine of great ideas for Wii U, and I really hope some of these come to fruition.

In this article I also created Wii U mock-ups of every game from scratch, something I really enjoyed. I hope you like the mock-ups, some of them almost look like a finished game!

DS Games We Want on Wii U

It's hard to argue that the early concepts of Wii U must have taken inspiration from the DS, as with dual-screened touch screen set-up, the console mimicks it's handheld counterpart. Which leaves Wii U in a position to take traditionally handheld franchises and put them on the big screen. So with that in mind, I take a look at six franchises that could, and perhaps should, make the leap from handheld to the big screen in the next generation.
